Welcome to Year 3/4

Learning is fun!

Homework 21.10.16

We would just like to say a big thank you to our class who have worked so hard this half term both in class and at home! Well done.

Over the half term holiday  we are just asking children to go over any spellings they found challenging. They can use an activity from their spelling journal to learn them or they can practise them in sentences.

For Maths homework, we have sent home the 2 and 5x tables for the Year 2s to have a look through and the 3 and 4x tables for the year 3s to practise.

There will be no spelling test on the first week back so no spellings will come home tonight.

Thank you, have a lovely break.

Year 3 Column Addition and Subtraction using Dienes

Yesterday the Year 3 children  used dienes to add and subtract 3-digit numbers, the children were fantastic using the dienes and will now go on to practise the written method.

Lovely Artwork

This half term in Art we have been looking at the artist Eric Joyner. It links in with our topic on The Iron Man as Eric Joyner paints pictures with robots in them. A lot of his paintings involve a nice scenic background with a robot placed somewhere within the landscape.

The children started off with careful sketches of the landscape. Then they went onto to adding colour with oil pastels and finally they drew and stuck on their robot.

Below are some examples of Eric Joyner’s work

Amazing Homework

We are so impressed with your efforts so far with the homework project! You are really putting a lot of effort into it. Here are a few that were brought in today (but there have been lots of other good ones too).

Past Tense Game

Today in literacy we were playing a game turning present tense verbs into the past tense. You had to roll a dice and whatever number you landed on you had to turn that verb into the past tense. We then wrote a sentence on our whiteboards using the past tense verb to describe our trip to Eyam. At the end of the week we will be writing recounts on our trip to Eyam.

Our Fantastic Trip to Eyam!

As part of our class topic, we visited Eyam, what a fantastic day! We learnt all about the plague in Eyam.  We really enjoyed seeing the beautiful village and understanding just how hard it must of been for the people who lived through this terrible tragedy. We visited the Museum and the Church where we had a brilliant talk given to us from a villager about how the plague got to Eyam and how they stopped it spreading.

The children behaved brilliantly, they were a credit. We would like to thank the parents who came on the trip, you were a great help. Here are some photos of our lovely day.

Our Class Trip to Eyam

Just to remind you that our class trip to Eyam is on Friday. Children can come in non-uniform but please make sure they have appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing. Please can you also remember a packed lunch, snacks and pocket money (a maximum of £3.00) if your child would like to purchase anything from the souvenir shop. Many thanks.

Super Science

In science this term we have been learning all about states of matter. We started the topic learning what it meant for something to be a solid, liquid and gas. We then learnt about the particle arrangements of these different states. To show these particle arrangements we used playdoh to model them. Have a look at some of the examples below.

We then did lots of investigations to find out all about gases. We put sponges into water and noticed lots of little bubbles. We squeezed empty plastic bottles with lids on and off. We noticed when the lids were off they were easier to squeeze whereas when the lids were on it was a lot harder. We discovered that this was because of the air trapped inside when we squeezed the bottles with the lids on. Finally, we put raisins into two different cups – one with tap water and the other fizzy water. We found that the raisins in the tap water sank to the bottom whereas the raisins in the fizzy water bobbed up and down. This was because of the carbon dioxide in the fizzy water.

Last week, we were investigating viscosity. We tested five different liquids to see how fast they would flow. Those that went the fastest had a low viscosity and those that went slower a high viscosity.

Today we were learning about how some things can change state from a solid to a liquid and vice versa. We had lots of different coloured ice cubes in a glass which we made careful observations about during the lesson.
